Learning together across different groups and communities is an important part of school life. These opportunities enrich the knowledge, skills and experiences of our students.
In recent weeks we have witnessed many examples at St Joseph’s School including:
1. The visit by the Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM, and her husband, Professor Graeme Nimmo RFD, which brought together students from Prep to Year 12 and many of the schools across the Granite Belt.
2. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) where an Australian written and illustrated book was read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
3. Our Year 11 and 12 Modern History and Legal Studies students joining their ‘classmates’ from Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Dalby for face to face learning as part of the hybrid learning collaboration between the schools.
4. Interschool sport including the Year 6 interschool competition, Bronco’s Cup in netball and rugby league, the interschool basketball competition, Bill Turner soccer and the district chess competition.
My thanks to the many staff who go above and beyond to provide these opportunities and the students who participate so well. We are certainly blessed.
God Bless
Year 11 and 12 Modern History and Legal Studies students travelled to Toowoomba recently with Mrs Roberts, Mr Kendall and myself for the first face to face meeting with teachers and students from OLSCC Dalby as part of the Hybrid Learning pilot being facilitated amongst the two schools.
This was a wonderful opportunity for students to meet and build new connections and relationships with the students from the other school, as well as engage in intensive learning around specialist topics leading into the next assessment phase. This is the first of a series of planned face to face meetings to continue to support the students achieve success in their academic studies.
There have been a huge number of sporting activities happening across the school recently, with students travelling to a number of regional sporting trials, as well as Broncos Cup rugby league and netball, and the interschool basketball competition. It is great to see so many of our students involved in representing our school with pride, and I thank all the staff who are giving up extra time to support these activities.

This week has seen final preparations being made to the Eisteddfod performances for both individuals, classes and also choirs. Yet again, we have a significant number of our students participating in the event and it has been great to see the work that they have all put in to developing their performances. Parents were informed via email of the schedule for Monday and Tuesday next week and given the disruption to the normal routines, we also made some suggestions around tuck shop ordering for Monday. I would like to thank all those involved in the preparation for next week for their work and wish all students the best of luck. As always, it is from the participation that each person will gain so much and any certificates received are the 'icing on the cake'.
Also this week:
- We were visited by The Queensland Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Jeannette Young PSM with her husband, Professor Graeme Nimmo RFD. We were delighted to be able to host the Prep students from around the area for a book reading which was then followed by a visit to the Year 6 classroom.
- The teachers have completed their data collection on reading and comprehension and this data will be used to inform their future teaching.
- We recognised National Simultaneous Storytime Day by listening to 'Family Tree' by Josh Pike and Ronojoy Ghosh.
- In our assembly on 27 May we acknowledged the start of National Reconciliation Week.
- A number of students have taken part in representative sporting events, with Ted Bonner successfully making his way into the State Championships for cross country.
With God's blessings

Living our Faith
The Religious Life of the School is the second dimension of religious education and focuses on the ways in which we live our faith through service, social action, prayer and worship, and religious identity.
Over recent weeks students have encountered opportunities to live this faith as demonstrated in the images below.

Our Year 12 Student Leaders, Preppies and Year 6's represented St Joey’s.
One of the School Leaders from Stanthorpe State High School conducted the acknowledgement of country, and our School Leaders escorted the Governor and Professor Nimmo around the Primary Campus.
Her Excellency briefly addressed the whole group, then she and Professor Nimmo treated the Preppies to a book reading and then visited the Year 3-6 classrooms. Her Excellency was also pleased to receive some thank you cards from the Preppies for her service to the community as Chief Health Officer.
The school was very proud to fly Her Excellency’s banner on our flagpole during the visit.
May 12th, saw St Joseph's Youth Council representatives, Brigid O'Dea and Claire Williamson receive their badges as St Joseph’s School representatives on the Southern Downs Youth Council (SDYC).
This program provides young people with opportunities to develop a better understanding of the role and function of local government, our community and local issues, "Have a voice" - raise issues, exchange ideas, discuss community issues, provide input in to Council planning, programs and services and influence local government decision making processes and have genuine and regular communication about issues that are important to them directly with the Mayor and Council Officers.
Congratulations Brigid and Claire !
The Preps attended Messy Play May at Weroona Park on Wednesday 18th May. Students enjoyed a morning out where the aim was to create the biggest mess possible!
Students had an awesome time getting down and messy AND they didn't even have to clean it up !!
Thankyou to BushKids for putting on this fabulous event.
NEWS FROM OUR SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Wednesday 18 May, saw St Joseph's Science Club Leaders receive their blazer pins from the University of Queensland.
This was in recognition of their commitment to promoting Science within our School community.
Well done students!
Year 11 Science Club leaders hosted lunch time Science Club activities by hosting junior students to help make tea bags fly, pop a balloon without touching it, explore bouncing eggs and investigate the ziploc bag that doesn’t leak !
Year 12 Chemistry students recently undertook a volumetric analysis to determine the unknown amount of citric acid in various citrus fruits or the amount of acetic acid in various vinegars.
This is part of the student experiment for Senior Chemistry.
Well done to all the students who took part in the Chess competition on Friday 20 May in Warwick.
Congratulations to Jye Marino who came second and Patrick Scudamore who came third in the Primary section.
This year Joey’s have entered a team into the Kokoda Challenge. This challenge sees students pushed outside their comfort zones to hike 48km in very challenging terrain, raising money for the Kokoda Youth Foundation.
This Foundation values courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice and aims to change lives through the spirit of Kokoda. The challenge takes place in July and students have been improving their fitness in readiness for the event.

Students in Year 3 have been busy problem solving using 3D shapes as part of their studies in Maths.
Do It For Dolly Day was held on Friday 13 May 2022 and students were called on to help make Dolly's own dream a reality. It's a wonderful opportunity to share Dolly's Dream message to be kind and speak even if your voice shakes.
Do It For Dolly Day is about bringing the community together to celebrate kindness and unite in taking a stand against bullying.
“By coming together and getting behind the cause, people will encourage their mates to do the same and, before long, everyone will feel brave enough to speak out against bullying,” says Dolly’s father, Tick Everett.
Students at St Joseph's recently enjoyed the Life Education program learning about healthy foods and sometimes foods, staying safe and being kind to others: kindness is the key!
Year 2 students especially enjoyed a visit from Harold as this is always a highlight. Poor Harold was finding it a bit too cold and rainy. Lucky Jane had a spare black hoodie for Harold to put on while visiting Stanthorpe.

Thursday 12th May was our first showcase concert of the year for our string, piano and band instrumental music students. It was great to see so many parents in attendance, and there were so many talented performers, some of whom have only had a couple of lessons.
Whilst it can be daunting performing to such a large audience, our students performed with confidence and demonstrated a high level of discipline and concentration. We know that this is the beginning of a long journey for the students and thank you all for your interest and support of the music here at St Joseph's.
We look forward to seeing you at our next concert!

Thanking you in advance !
Interschool Basketball Competition
Monday 16th May saw the commencement of the Interschool Basketball competition with St Joseph’s hosting Stanthorpe State High School in 3 games.
All matches were played in great spirit with the level of competition being quiet high with a mixture of newcomers to the game and some more experienced players all combining well.
St Joseph’s came out overall victors 2-1 on the day , with wins in both the Junior boys and Junior girls matches, whilst Stanthorpe SHS claimed a win in the Senior boys.
Monday 23rd May saw St Joseph's play at home again, this time taking on Scots PGC College.
Stay tuned for updates in the next school newsletter.
Bill Turner Girls Cup
On Wednesday 25th May, 15 students travelled to CF White oval to participate in the Bill Turner Girls Cup.
A late withdrawal from Assumption allowed us to take on Inglewood with fresh legs. The girls defeated them 7-0 with hat tricks to Alessia Gasparin and Brooke Day.
The last game was against SSHS where we took an early lead 2-0. The older girls on the other team had the fitness and managed to come back 3-2.
A great effort from all the girls! Well done Joeys!
